The Canon EF-S 17-85mm key feature is the image stabilization which works as promised. It provides good all around imaging performance especially in the telephoto region.
Its weakness however is the uninvited green/magenta chromatic deviation appearing at 17mm which is obviously visible with wide-angled shots. The lens exposes a barrel distortion at this range, but you can solve this by using Photoshop Lens Correction adjustment to correct the problem. It is simply an additional step of finishing required.
